There is nothing boring about Jesus! He is always doing something magnificent and meaningful. His ascension into Heaven was one more miraculous moment which was absolutely necessary and a part of His plan with God the Father.
And now… that’s where Jesus is! In Heaven, seated at the right hand of God. He was welcomed home, and exalted by God to the place of authority above all. He reigns as King of Kings and serves as our Great High Priest. We have a friend in Heaven!
Jesus told the disciples in John 14-16 that He had to go away, back to the Father, so that the promised Holy Spirit could be sent. Jesus kept His word. He went away and 10 days later, the Holy Spirit arrived!
What a rollercoaster ride of emotions the disciples had been on over the last 53 days. First, Jesus said He was leaving… that He would be killed. Grief and sorrow. Then the disciples watched as He was betrayed, arrested, and condemned unjustly. Shock. Then Jesus was crucified, dead, and buried. Gut-wrenching pain and loss. Three days later, He arose! Bewilderment. Confusion. Finally… at the end of Resurrection Sunday… they rejoiced at His bodily presence with them. After 40 days of absorbing the realities of Jesus’ death and resurrection, they watched Him ascend into Heaven. What now? More grief? No!! Great joy!
Luke ends his gospel account with the report that the disciples now rejoiced with Jesus, as He had previously told them they should (John 14:28).
Luke 24:51-53 Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
In the video below, I’ll discuss what we learn from Jesus’ ascension, and explain a few things about the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit arrived.
