You may have experienced hard trials throughout your life. You may be very familiar with the book of Job if you turned to it to find a biblical example of one who suffered and grieved and looked to God for explanations of the trials in his life.
Whether you are intimately acquainted with the book of Job, or not, I hope that I will be able to encourage you with what I understand to be the overwhelming purpose of this book.
While the book of Job deals with suffering, it isn’t about answering the question “why do people suffer?”
The BOOK OF JOB IS ABOUT ACKNOWLEDGING THAT GOD IS GOD.
It’s about humbly submitting to Him as the Holy One who is infinite in wisdom, power, justice, and goodness.
Those are two powerful and complex purposes. I’ll talk more about those in my lecture, as well as briefly commenting on these questions as well:
What was the purpose of the trial in Job’s life? (That’s what Job really wanted to know!! Why is this happening to me??)
What was the purpose of Job’s wife’s attitude?
What was the purpose in Job’s extended sickness? Why didn’t God let Job die? Job really wanted to know this too.
What was the purpose in the friends “counsel” – better described as “attacks” on Job ?
What was the purpose of God’s response to Job?
There are many questions in the book of Job, and about the book of Job, that are not answered. (What was Job’s wife’s name??!!) But, we will learn so much from what is recorded.
Are you willing to take a journey with Job as he wrestles with pain, confusion, and temptation, while trusting that his life is in God’s hands?
I hope so!
I shared this illustration of the book of Job during my introduction. Each speaker is color coded. Job’s speeches are in blue.
