In Job 36 – 37, Job’s young friend Elihu demonstrates God’s power and justice through the example of His control over the weather. It’s exciting, informative, and reminds us of God’s sovereign control over all things. Elihu’s closing comments prepare Job, and us, for God’s answer to Job.
One of my favorite verses in these chapters is:
Job 37:14 “Listen to this, O Job; Stand still and consider the wondrous works of God.”
In Job 38 – 41, the Lord shows up in a whirlwind and delivers a sobering, humbling, and amazing response, rebuke, and revelation to Job. Job had called God’s actions into question, and God is going to set him straight! We have the tendency to what Job did – thinking of God as less than He is – and thinking of ourselves as more than we are – so God’s speech also corrects us when our perspectives get distorted.
Through the Lord’s speech, we learn a special word that describes Him: He is OMNICOMPETENT! More on that in my video below, where you’ll hear that God is the Master Creator, Master Planner, Master Artist, Master Caretaker, and Master Strategist.
A great song to listen to after this lesson would be Casting Crown’s “I’ll Praise You in the Storm” which has lyrics based on Job 1:21.
There are two handouts below. “The Wonders of God’s Weather” serves as the introduction to “Then the Lord Answered Job”.
