Ephesians is a book of mysteries!
It’s a book that is full of things that once were unknown, but now are revealed…some things are easy to understand and some things are hard to understand.
The main mystery that is explained in Ephesians is the full gospel, that Christ died for Jews and Gentiles, and that by grace through faith, Gentiles are made fellow heirs with Jews in Christ.
But there is another mystery that runs throughout the letter to the Ephesians…
A mystery that has been revealed yet is still hard to comprehend…
The book of Ephesians is saturated with the concept of the mysterious HOLY TRINITY.
Notice how the three persons of the Godhead are referred to in the following verses:
Ephesians 2:22… you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
Ephesians 3:16…. That He would grant you to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man
Ephesians 3:17… That Christ would dwell in your hearts through faith.
Ephesians 3:19… that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
God eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God, and there is one God. (Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology)
There are three foundations upon which this definition is built:
- Monotheism: there is only one God.
- There are three divine persons.
- The persons are coequal and coeternal.
Said another way:
- There is one God.
- God is three persons.
- Each person is fully God.
I’ll discuss the mysteries in Ephesians and the mystery of the Trinity in the video below. And near the end, I’ll talk about Spirograph drawings!
